Statement
My most recent focus is on photography and collage work. The “road work” photographs on this site are images found while walking the streets of Hamilton. Years of traffic abuse (particularly industrial traffic) and extreme weather conditions work together to produce some interesting visuals in the pavement. I have seen and photographed “realistic” images (i.e. resembling trees, animals, birds, people, religious symbols, etc) as well as “abstract” compositions, some of which remind me of existing works by well known artists. It is all there in the road, if you look for it. The collage/paintings combine newspapers and sales flyers with acrylic paint. On one level, as a writer, I cannot resist integrating printed materials with my visual art. On another level, these collages represent a form of recycling/reconciling. They allow me to make use of the free materials that land on my front porch on a daily basis and they also allow me to reconcile my “information overload” anxiety with my need to make visual art in spite of and in addition to it all. Both the collage works and the photographs involve the use of found materials and images. This is the common element throughout all my work.
